Next time you feel a sense of panic come over you, I want you to embrace it with all your heart. Your mind will resist this at first but I want you to be strong. Welcome the feeling like you would welcome a close friend into your home. Talk to it, consciously note that you have never welcomed this feeling into your life before, all you have been used to so far was to push it away. You want to get to know it better, you want to experience it with all its might. You want to observe how it feels without resistance.
This is the point where you have to stay strong, you MUST be firm even though you will be apprehensive. For the first time you are actually trying to embrace the feelings that had you terrified in the past, but this time it’s different…this time YOU are opening up and allowing the feeling to flow through your body. You know that you are safe, you know that you are not in danger. Be very aware of the sensations in your body. Allow any fear to pass into your body. Allow it to flow throughout your body without any resistance.
You will get to a point where the sensations get very intense and you feel you cannot take any more. This is perfectly natural and also the time when you need to be at your strongest.
When you get to the point where your mind wants you to give up, I want you stomp your foot on the ground and demand the full and most powerful fear to come into your body. Shout out if you have to; insist that you get the worst sensations related to your panic attack. Make it absolutely CLEAR that YOU are in control and that you can handle anything this thing throws at you. You’re not a bloody victim anymore, you are strong enough to take it all. If your heart beats fast, tell it to beat faster, if your mind is playing thoughts of fear, I want you demand more, I want you to scream out; “is that all you’ve got? is that it? is that the best you can do?” See it through to the end no matter what, and your fear will subside naturally. It may threaten to surface in short bursts for a moment or two but this is nothing more than a light bulb flickering before the power goes out.
What you have done here is told fear that you are not playing the victim role anymore, you are telling your mind that you are the one who makes the final decision on how you handle fear. You are ultimately taking control BACK!!! You have made the ultimate statement to your mind that no amount of fear can hold you down or break you, and the mind must listen to the teacher…which is of course, you. You are stating that your mind is the slave to your will, and not the other way round.
The reason this technique is so powerful and effective is because most of the behavior that we illicit, we are NOT consciously aware of. When you choose to embrace the fear and sensations without resistance, you are ultimately taking control by alerting the mind to the fact, that you are now AWARE of the outcome of the ordeal, and that you don’t have to assume the worst outcome anymore. You have created a conscious reminder to your mind, that you no longer fear anxiety…you OWN it instead.
If you take on the challenge to implement this technique, you will have done a very courageous thing by facing your fears and welcoming them with open arms. Practice this every time you feel a panic attack come over you. It’s important to work at this.
